Our story

A sugar baron nobody remembers, and a name we couldn't let go of.

Where it started

A classroom at Yale, then a farm in Cuba.

Baron of Havana didn't start as a business plan. It started as a question one grad student couldn't put down: why does a cigar have to be a commodity? Everything that came after, the trip to Cuba, the factory in the Dominican Republic, the name itself, was an answer to that question, arrived at the slow way.

The founder was a student at the Yale School of Management when a long-running personal passion for premium cigars turned into something more deliberate: a company built on emotion and experience, not just on having a fine product. Plenty of cigar companies could claim the second part. Almost none had tried seriously for the first.

So before there was a company, there was a trip. To learn the craft properly meant going to where it was invented, so the founder went to Cuba, through Vuelta Abajo, Pinar del Río, and Havana itself, and learned the process from the ground up: how terroir shapes flavor before a leaf is ever touched, then the fermenting, the aging, the blending. Not a tour. An apprenticeship.

The partnership

What couldn't be made in Cuba, we built next door.

A cigar learned in Cuba can't legally be made there for export. The regime saw to that. So Baron of Havana followed the same road generations of Cuban tobacco families had already taken: out of Cuba, into the Cibao Valley in the Dominican Republic.

There, the brand partnered with Tabacalera Palma, a factory that has grown fine Cuban-seed tobacco since 1936, and with master blender José “Jochy” Blanco, a fourth-generation tobacco grower and second-generation cigar maker who has quietly shaped some of the industry's most respected boutique blends. Cigar Journal put him on its cover in 2022 and called him something better than any title we could have invented: a Taste Librarian.

Through Tabacalera Palma, Baron of Havana became vertically integrated, involved from the seed in the field to the finished box. That mattered because two of the three lines, Blue Baron and Red Baron, recreate cigar experiences the founder had in Cuba (Black Baron, the third, has no Cuban antecedent), and they needed to survive the move intact. Blanco was the one blender the founder trusted to carry them across.

Why personalization

A box of cigars is already a gift. We wanted it to be a moment.

Once the three blends were finished (mild, medium, and full body, each one held to the standard set in Cuba), the question changed. Not what goes in the box, but who is the box for.

A fine cigar is already a high-value object to most people who receive one. Personalization is what turns that object into something else entirely: a gift that couldn't have been meant for anyone but the person holding it. That is the entire premise of Baron of Havana. Not the cheapest box on the shelf, not the most expensive. The one that remembers whose it is.

The name

Every box carries the name of a man almost nobody remembers.

Julio Lobo was the most successful sugar entrepreneur in pre-revolutionary Cuba, a self-made billionaire known in his day as the sugar baron of Havana. History has mostly let him slip out of view. The founder, a former currencies and commodities trader who recognized a fellow market obsessive when he saw one, decided the name deserved to survive somewhere. Baron of Havana keeps the title and drops the sugar.

Lobo's story is bigger than sugar, though. Obsessed with Napoleon, he quietly assembled the largest collection of Napoleonic memorabilia outside of Paris: manuscripts, statues, paintings, even Napoleon's throne, a collection that now forms the core of the Museo Napoleónico in Havana. He built hospitals, schools, and roads with his own money, largely uncredited. And when the revolution came, he was reportedly the last major property owner Che Guevara personally expelled from the country.

That obsession with Napoleon didn't stay in Lobo's collection. It's in the boxes. The blue velvet, the coat of arms, the sword motifs, all Napoleonic in spirit. Napoleon signed with a single letter, N. Every Baron of Havana engraving closes the same way, with a single letter: B.

How far it goes

One box, three strengths, if that's what the table needs.

Nobody smokes the same cigar at nine in the morning and eleven at night, and no foursome has identical taste. So a single box can hold any mix of the three blends (one, two, or all three) instead of forcing everyone toward the same strength.

Personalization doesn't stop at a name, either. Any graphic that can be drawn can be laser engraved into the cedar: a company mark, a club crest, a family coat of arms. That capability turned out to matter for reasons beyond gifting: a personalized box has become the kind of object people bring into a room when they want a deal, or a relationship, to be remembered.

Beyond the box

The same idea, applied everywhere a cigar goes.

  • The Golf Collection

Built for the course: a maintenance-free micro-humidor pack, a cutter, a ball marker and a magnetic holder, personalized the same way the box is.

  • Grand Master

The first premium cigar line dedicated to the Grand Master in the 245-year history of New York Masonry. A longer format, blended for contemplation, still engraved for one person.

  • Pairings & events

A cigar is half of the evening. Through partnerships with Dos Artes, Malavida, and Señor Artesano tequilas, Hillrock Estate Distillery, and Fedway Associates, we build the other half.

Giving back

A business built on relationships tries to strengthen a few beyond its own.

Baron of Havana has supported the Rashawn Jackson Endowment Fund, through the Youth Sports Foundation; the Tunnel to Towers Foundation's golf outing at Liberty National; Special Olympics Chicago; and the Novak Djokovic Foundation's fundraising for the Belgrade Hospice. None of it is the point of the business. It's just what a business does when it's in a position to.

Julio Lobo built an empire and let almost none of it carry his name forward. We couldn't let that happen twice.

Questions, answered

Is every box truly one of a kind?

Yes, most cigar brands sell the same box to everyone, while every Baron of HAVANA box is engraved for one person and filled with the blend you choose: mild, medium, full body or a mix of all three. No two will ever be the same. Make the one that is theirs.

Will the engraving actually look good?

Yes, every lid is laser engraved into Spanish cedar, so logos, lettering and fine detail come out crisp and permanent. All you need is a name, a message or a photo from your phone, and a real person reviews every design before it is engraved. Start your box and see it take shape.

Are the cigars really premium?

Yes, every cigar is long filler, handmade at Tabacalera Palma in the Dominican Republic from some of the finest tobaccos in the world, with an impeccable draw from first light to final inch. Choose any of our complex blends, mild, medium or full body, or all three at once. Pick the one that fits the person or the occasion.

Will these suit someone loyal to their own brand?

Yes, because loyal smokers are exactly who appreciate this most. Our blends run mild through full body and sit alongside what they already smoke rather than replacing it. The box with their name on it is theirs regardless. Build it and let the cigars speak.

Will the cigars stay fresh if they are not smoked right away?

Yes, every box is packed with a Boveda humidity pack that keeps the cigars in great condition for at least a year, as long as the box stays sealed and away from temperatures below 50 or above 80 degrees. Once opened, move them to a humidor if the air is cold or dry. Order now and give them whenever the moment is right.

Are they right for weddings, tournaments and corporate events?

Yes, a personalized Baron of HAVANA box elevates any event and remains a keepsake long after it. We regularly make boxes for weddings, golf tournaments, client gifts and milestone celebrations, and most orders of up to 20 boxes can be made within a day. Request a quote and we will take it from there.

Is my information safe?

Yes, checkout runs on Shopify’s secure, encrypted payment system, and we never see or store your card details. Your photos and personal messages are used only to make your box. Order with complete peace of mind.

Will my package arrive quickly?

Yes, we pack and ship from New Jersey within 48 business hours, and most orders arrive within 3 to 7 business days. Shipping is free on orders over $100, to every state except Arkansas, Hawaii, South Dakota and Utah. Order today and it is on its way within two business days.

Do you have a refund policy?

Yes, every order is covered by our 180-day guarantee: if you are not satisfied, return it within 180 days for a full refund. If a box ever arrives damaged or incorrect, we make it right immediately. You have nothing to lose by trying it.

Is there someone I can call or email?

Yes, you can reach a real person at +1 (201) 991-1092 or contact@royaltobaccocorp.com. We are happy to help with a design, a corporate order or a deadline. Call us and let’s build it together.
