A passion that sent a school project on a journey.
I have always loved cigars. So when an MBA project at Yale gave me an excuse, I went to Havana. I toured, I learned, I met the people who make them, and I brought some cigars back with me.
While I was there I learned about Julio Lobo, the sugar baron of Havana. He was not only the richest man in pre-revolutionary Cuba. He built schools, he built roads, and he was an extraordinary character who was obsessed with Napoleon. He bought nearly every piece of Napoleonic memorabilia that came up for sale, and turned Havana into the largest Napoleon museum outside of France.
I came home under the impression of both. So I built a box. Napoleon, with the influence of Havana and of Julio Lobo. Napoleon blue. And because that kind of opulence asks for it, I engraved my own name on the lid. That was the moment I realized I was no longer holding just a box of cigars.
